The Melting and the Making

Explore our extraordinary process from our glass studio through to our jewellery studio...

I couldn’t imagine not having a hand in the process, a little piece of my heart exists in every single charm - each one has been created from nothing but a dream

- Katie, Picnic Blanket Founder

Lampwork Glass

The enchanting beauty of Picnic Blanket Jewellery is accomplished through the ancient craft of Lampwork. To translate her visions into tangible glass objects, Katie uses the intense flame of a specialist torch to melt and sculpt her miniatures.
Lampwork is time-consuming and requires incredible dedication to mastering the craft. This astonishing art can be traced all the way back to the 5th Century BCE. The process begins when the glass colours are selected, and once the torch ignites the magic can begin. The glass is heated until molten, wound, manipulated and sculpted until the finished piece is perfect. The final charm is fired in a kiln, ensuring its strength and longevity for years to come.
Katie quickly fell head over heels in love with glass the first time she wielded a rod. As a friend to all animals, she embarked on an enchanting journey of design and craft, surrounded by her miniature companions. With Picnic Blanket she is doubtless leading a lampworking revolution, and hopes that the brand's patronage will encourage a resurgence of the craft, thus preserving its future for generations to come.

“Everyone said not to try lampwork - unconvinced I could master the craft quickly enough. But I proved them wrong! The minute I left the studio after first trying lampwork I burst into tears! I had found it, my thing, my calling. And that was it, I haven’t looked back”
